This program features trends that are already emerging,
and that have the potential to spread quickly because they appeal to
experienced consumers’ needs and wants in almost universal ways. The
same goes for the real world industry examples I highlight: they’re best
of breed, and sourced from New York to California.
In that sense, this program is very much about the
SHORT-TERM FUTURE*: there is nothing in this program that can’t be
applied today or tomorrow. It is all happening, it’s a snapshot of what
other organizations are having fun with all over the country as we
speak, and that makes it perhaps even scarier than exploring the
unknown, since there is no excuse for not knowing or acting upon the
information provided. But. What if one or more of the trends and related examples featured
really does not apply to your market? It’s a question I’m often asked.
My standard reply (assuming you’re right about your market’s
un-readiness):

First of all, why limit yourself to what is happening in your market
bet on one thing it is coming to your market soon!

Secondly, you only have to dive into one of the many trends to find
further proof that when it comes to brands, when it comes to
consumption, the similarities in markets far outnumber the differences.

Thirdly, instead of worrying about readiness in a specific market, you
can also go ahead and carefully prepare for that moment, while learning
best practices from those who are already applying the trend elsewhere.
If you want to know what’s going to happen in 2025 this
is not the program for you try Wikipedia’s take on
futurism that would be a good starting point.

Creating the Brand Called You 2.0
If there’s one favor you can ever do for individuals in
your company, it’s to make them INTERESTING to others. People want to be
loved, to be admired, to be coveted, to be special, and to be unique.
The products and services that consumers will want to buy because
association with those products and services makes them more
interesting, it’s about time we addressed the burgeoning trend of
individuals being interesting because of what they do, say, who they
connect to and so on. Southwest Airlines allows their employees to be a
Brand and there for a part of their overall brand. How to you help your
employees create their own Brand? A brand that is also beneficial to the
organization?
Remember Tom Peter’s ‘Brand Called You’? Visionary in
1997, the (excellent) Fast Company article (www.fastcompany.com/magazine/10/brandyou.html)
was all about individual employees thinking of themselves as brands,
making themselves more attractive to… employers, if not Big Brand
employers. Standing out as a personal brand was about standing out
amidst your colleagues.
From the article: “No matter what you're doing today,
there are four things you've got to measure yourself against. First,
you've got to be a great teammate and a supportive colleague. Second,
you've got to be an exceptional expert at something that has real value.
Third, you've got to be a broad-gauged visionary—a leader, a teacher, a
farsighted "imaginer." Fourth, you've got to be a businessperson—you've
got to be obsessed with pragmatic outcomes. It's this simple: you are a
brand. You are in charge of your brand. There is no single path to
success. And there is no one right way to create the brand called You.
Except this: Start today. Or else.”
Fast forward to ‘now’. Personal branding is still big.
But it’s BRAND CALLED YOU 2.0 now. It’s about being an interesting and
desirable brand to other individuals. To peers. To friends of friends.
It’s play lists and videos and pictures, it’s one’s musings and creative
outbursts, it’s gaming scores, it’s preferences, it’s portfolios, it’s
an entire personal branding campaign trying to impress everyone . What
does your company gain from helping individual create a personal brand?
Haven’t we known for many years that people lease because of the person
leasing to them? Residents renew their lease because of a person and the
experience they create for the resident.
The same principals hold true for companies and
apartment communities each by themselves is a brand. We used to think of
a brand in terms of multiples. That is no longer the total meaning. A
brand is now more than ever a single community with individual brands of
people. How are we going to turn a single apartment community into its
own brand? How do we encourage employees to create their own brand? That
really is the challenge we are faced with today!
In this program attendees will learn that Individuality
is the most powerful marketing tool we possess. The same is true of a
community and company. Branding is all about standing out in the crowd,
and as technology increases our connections both personally and
professionally, standing out in the growing crowd is more important than
ever before!

How can we encourage our Favorite Residents to become Brand Evangelists?
We use traditional marketing tactics (and some that aren’t even old
enough to be “traditional” yet) to send a one-way advertising message to
our resident Brand Evangelists who chat us up to their friends. Are we
empowering them to communicate a message to potential residents? For
example we send them a resident referral message offering to pay them
$000.00 when they refer someone to our community. That’s one –way
marketing and there is a chance it will work and a chance that it won’t!
